In therapy of cancer patients, linear accelerators play a major role within cancer medicine. The aim of radiotherapy with linear accelerators is the destruction of cancer cells. Those are purposefully attacked with X-rays or electrons. The therapy with an accelerator is effective because the tumor tissue is irradiated with a higher dosage. Cancer cells are sustainably damaged, finally die off and will be rejected by the body. However, healthy tissue that is only exposed to a lower radiation dose will repair itself and survive.

Linear Accelerator: Positioning of particular importance

The particular challenge for radiation oncologists involves firstly the definition of the X-ray dose level in order to destroy the cancer cells without straining the surrounding healthy tissue unnecessarily. Secondly, the patient positioning is of particular importance, as the tumor should be approached without as little as possible irradiation of healthy tissue. Furthermore, the patient must be fixed in a particular manner in order to prevent undesired changes of the X-ray target through movements of the patient.
